Questions

macOS says the app can't be opened

The launcher isn't notarized yet. Right-click the app, choose Open, and confirm once. After that it opens normally.

Windows SmartScreen shows a warning

Click "More info", then "Run anyway". The installer isn't code-signed yet.

Do I need to own Minecraft?

The launcher signs you in with a username only, so it works in singleplayer and on offline-mode servers. Online servers need a Microsoft login, which isn't built in yet.

The launcher can't find Java

Install Java 25 (Temurin or Zulu), make sure java is on your PATH, then press Launch again.
